The Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) would prefer to see Democratic Party (DS) leader Boris Tadic as the new prime minister, the DS told Tanjug. The DS Presidency decided late Monday, based on an agreement reached on May 8, to start talks on forming a government with its coalition partners - the SPS-PUPS-JS pre-election coalition. "SPS doesn't mind Tadic as new prime minister" The SPS has not come out with a statement yet. If the DS and the SPS agree to form a government together, the decision on who will sit in the prime minister's office will be made by Tadic and SPS leader Ivica Dacic, the news agency has said. Speaking later on Tuesday, one of the SPS vice-presidents, Dijana Vukomanovic, said that the party "doesn't mind" the possibility of Tadic or Dragan Djilas taking the office of prime minister. "We are not against Tadic as prime minister, but it's important to set the program of a future government and its direction," she told reporters in Belgrade. Asked if the party would also negotiate with the Progressives (SNS), Vukomanovic said that the Socialists "confirmed their strategic partnership with the DS and gave plenty of signals that it's sustainable". Unlike her fellow SPS vice-president Dusan Bajatovic, who today warned that the government would not be formed quickly, Vukomanovic believes that it will happen "very soon". Meanwhile, B92 has learned that the Socialists have been in unofficial talks with both the Democrats and the Progressives, but official negotiations to form a ruling majority in parliament, that would elect the next government, are yet to begin.
