Social Democratic Party of Serbia (SDPS) leader Rasim Ljajic says negotiations about the new government could take longer due to Tomislav Nikolic’s victory. ”A period of negotiations about the forming of the government will now follow, it is certain that the talks will take longer than it was anticipated,” he told Beta news agency. “Talks on new govt. could take longer than expected” According to him, Boris Tadic paid a price of citizens’ dissatisfaction. “The one who is the least to blame took the fall, the one who did the most and did his work the best he could in the given circumstances,” Ljajic said. His SDPS was a part of Democratic Party (DS)-led coalition in the May 6 elections. He stressed that the SDPS had done its part of the job since Tadic won the majority of votes in Sandzak and Novi Pazar, adding that the voter turnout was higher in the run-off. The labor and social policy minister believes that Nikolic’s victory is a surprise, bearing in mind that Tadic had a minimal advantage in the first round and that the majority of parties supported him in the second. “The support of the parties was obviously verbal and it did not manage to materialize itself,” he explained and added that the support had created an atmosphere that Tadic would certainly win in the run-off, causing many voters to stay home and not cast their vote. Ljajic believes that position of many analysts that voters should cast “white ballots”, i.e. invalid ballots, contributed to the result. The SDPS leader added that such campaign was “a certain experiment with the state”. Rasim Ljajic Beta
