Head of the EU Delegation to Serbia Vincent Degert has congratulated Tomislav Nikolic on his victory in the second round of the presidential elections. He also congratulated the Serbian people, adding that the new president would certainly face a number of challenges, but the EU was ready to cooperate with him. “EU ready for cooperation with new president” “I would like to congratulate very much to Mr. Nikolic on his election as the president of Serbia. I would also like to congratulate the citizens for the very democratic and competitive elections that have been taking place these two weekends. This is good news for democracy and stability here in Serbia,” Degert told Tanjug. “The EU is aware “that there are a number of expectations (coming) from the citizens of Serbia in terms of economic development and well-being, so there are a number of challenges,” he said. “It will be very important to have soon a good government in place, a stable government, and a stable parliament as well, as these institutions are tackling these challenges,” Degert said. He pointed to the reconciliation in the region as one of the key issues to be considered. “Serbia has been granted the EU candidate status this year, and the EU wants to continue working together with Serbia, with Nikolic and the new government on this path,” said the EU ambassador. “The challenges include “the rule of law and economic development. These are issues which will need to be tackled soon and we are ready to work with Mr. Nikolic on these achievements,” Degert said. Vincent Degert (Beta, file) Tanjug
