Nothing is over when it comes to the UN General Assembly presidency until the votes are counted on June 8, Serbian Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic told daily Blic. “We have plenty of reasons to hope we will win, but every voting in the UN, especially when it is secret, is over only when the result is released,” he was quoted as saying. FM optimistic about UNGA presidency chances Even though Jeremic could not confirm the information, Blic has unofficially learnt that Serbia will get eight votes from the EU member states. This gives Serbia hope that Jeremic could become the new UNGA president. According to Blic, the Serbian foreign minister addressed the Arab League representatives yesterday and he will hold meetings with the Asia-Pacific Group on Thursday. He is also scheduled to have a series of 200 meetings soon. The daily says that the vote for the UNGA president would represent a test of the work Serbia has done in the last four years. “During Vuk Jeremic’s address, the UN Security Council hall was full, for the most part people came to hear his address. However, it is still far from the final decision and victory. If (Democratic Party leader) Boris Tadic by any chance loses the presidential election, Lithuania is planning on using it to call the members to vote for its candidate due to alleged political instability in Serbia,” the daily’s source was quoted as saying.
