OSCE assesses elections in Serbia as fair

OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) has concluded that the elections held in Serbia on May 6 were open and extremely competitive. OSCE Deputy Spokesman Frane Maroevic once again repeated the OSCE assessment that all participants of the election process expressed assurance in its regularity. OSCE assesses elections in Serbia as fair At a joint press conference on Monday, OSCE short-term observer mission leader Matteo Mecacci said that the election atmosphere had been peaceful and that everyone involved in the electoral process had agreed no irregularities had been observed and had accepted the results as valid. “I congratulate the Serbian people on the achievement,” Mecacci said, pointing out that the citizens and the political representatives had shown decisive progress on their path to building a fully-fledged democracy. Maroevic confirmed that, according to the ODIHR report, OSCE observers concluded that voters had had a wide choice between a variety of political options and that competitors were able to freely run their campaigns. “Elections in Serbia were in compliance with the majority of standards for democratic elections of the Council of Europe (CoE),” CoE Parliamentary Assembly (PACE) observer delegation head Jean-Charles Gardetto stated on Monday.
