EU General Affairs Council Chairman Nicolai Wammen says a door to Serbia’s EU accession talks will be open if progress is made in the Belgrade-Pristina talks. He stressed that the European Commission (EC) would present its report on Serbia’s progress in the fall. “EU integration depends on Belgrade-Pristina talks” “If the progress continues in the dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina, there should be good chances that the Commission would recommend the Council to open the accession talks,” Wammen told daily Vecernje novosti. The Danish European Affairs Minister sad that reaching of the agreement on regional cooperation between Belgrade and Pristina was a great achievement but added that the EU was disappointed that there were problems with the implementation of the agreement. “The agreement was reached through the dialogue process so a solution for the implementation should also be found in the dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina. I urge both sides show a spirit of compromise,” Wammen was quoted as saying. He added that there were many issues that still needed to be solved, starting from telecommunications and electricity. When asked whether Serbia’s recognition of Kosovo would be one of the conditions on the EU pathway, Wammen said that nobody in the EU was asking Serbia to recognize Kosovo but that Serbia and the Serbian people should realize that nobody wanted to bring a frozen conflict in the EU. “Therefore, in the end a solution will have to be found that will allow Serbia to become an EU member and at the same time allow the EU to have normal relations with Kosovo. The more Belgrade is able to contribute to it, the road toward Serbia’s full-fledged membership in the EU will be easier,” he concluded. Nicolai Wammen (Tanjug, file) Tanjug Vecernje novosti
