Presidential candidate and opposition DSS party leader Vojislav Kostunica says he is prepared to enter talks with the Serb Progressives (SNS) after elections. Kostunica told state broadcaster RTS in an interview on Wednesday that it was best for Serbia to be politically neutral, since its relationship with the EU was "damaging". Asked about relations between his party and the DS and the SNS - both of which are in favor of Serbia's future EU membership - he said that "we should wait for the outcome of elections", but added that the currently ruling party had done great damage to Serbia by insisting on EU integrations. "We will talk to the SNS, but we will stick to the principle of political neutrality," stated Kostunica. The former Serbian prime minister for two terms also asserted that the European Union was "requesting for Serbia to give up Kosovo, and was meddling in our internal affairs". "The EU also has an eye on Serbia's internal arrangements and offered its support for the unconstitutional Statute of Vojvodina," he said, adding that the status of membership candidate, granted to Serbia earlier this year, "does not mean a lot". In this context, he noted the examples of Turkey and Macedonia - two candidates for EU membership that have had this status for years without being allowed to join the organization.
