As long as there are Serbs in Kosovo and Metohija, local elections will also be held, says Kosovska Mitrovica Mayor Krstimir Pantic. Reacting to the announcement yesterday that Belgrade would not organize the local ballot in the province on May 6 because that would violate UN Resolution 1244, Pantic told B92 that it was "no wonder" UNMIK said it would not organize the voting. "As long as Serbs are in Kosovo, there'll be elections" According to him, the Serbian government deliberately formulated its letter to UNMIK badly. The letter was sent to ask the UN mission in Kosovo to assist in organizing the election. "Regardless of what (Kosovo Minister Goran) Bogdanovic has said, I am certain that in at least two municipalities in the north of the province elections will be held, and that we will show that, regardless of the Serbian government's stance, Kosovo and Metohija is an integral part of Serbia, and that as long as there are Serbs in Kosovo and Metohija, local elections will be held in those areas where there are Serbs and where conditions allow it," the mayor concluded. There are four majority Serb municipalities north of the Ibar River, while Serbs also live in isolated enclaves in the south.
