Serbian businessman and leader of the Movement Strength of Serbia party Bogoljub Karic says that, in the past, he "financed almost all political parties". In 2010, it was reported that Karic was granted political asylum in Russia and therefore could not be extradited to Serbia, which issued an international arrest warrant for him, accusing him of damaging the state budget for EUR 60mn in the so-called Mobtel Affair. Fugitive tycoon says he bankrolled "most parties" Karic told Belgrade-based Blic newspaper that he is currently "creating" - working on multi-billion dollar deals and employing tens of thousands of people. He also claims to be innocent of the charges the state brought against him, that he proved this "in front of the highest institutions of the Russian Federation", and that he was ready to do the same in Serbia, "as soon as the authorities enable for it to happen". "At a time when my life was in danger I had two options - either to accept detention, which would have ended in my 'suicide', or to listen to the advice from a friend who was a top state official and leave Serbia. If power centers started bankruptcy procedures in my bank, insurance (company), Mobtel, BK TV, physical liquidation logically followed," Karic described his decision to flee the country. He once again denied that he and his family members transfered EUR 60mn from the account of mobile telephony provider Mobtel to their private accounts and those of the BK Group company. Mobtel was sold by the state to Telenor in 2006, while Karic says that Serbia "gained EUR 1.8bn from the sale", and asserts that the European Commission has requested that documents related to the privatization - now marked as "state secret" - be declassified. According to Karic, this came after evidence was submitted "that clearly shows the connections between (Austrian entrepreneur) Martin Schlaff and Mladjan Dinkic and other high ranking Serbian officials".
