Serbian Prime Minister Mirko Cvetkovic stated on Saturday that modern Serbia had a chance only if regional peace was preserved. He added that strong political and economic ties with the world needed to be established. Serbia is future-oriented country, PM says Pointing out that the uprising was an epopee of the libertarian spirit which left 20,000 people dead, Cvetkovic said, on the occasion of marking the 95th anniversary of the Toplica uprising, that the real hero was the one who did everything possible to prevent such tragedies from happening ever again. The large-scale uprising broke out against Austro-Hungarian and Bulgarian military authorities in southern Serbia and the region of Kosovo during WWI in 1917 but, despite initial successes, it was crushed in blood. "This government has chosen the path of peace and dialogue with everyone with whom Serbia has open and controversial issues," the PM explained. "Our mission is to preserve Serbia in both political and economic fields, to preserve peace and act in the interest of the citizens. We have launched the dialogue on Kosovo and Metohija and this is the only way to provide survival for our people in the province," Cvetkovic noted. This, as he put it, is a difficult task, full of temptations, whose fulfillment requires a lot of time and patience, but because of the responsibility before history and the future generations, it must not be given up. "Serbia is a future-oriented country. We have chosen the path of peace and reconciliation, since it offers a chance for a dignified life of every citizen, speedier prosperity, cooperation and building a common future in the Balkans," the PM concluded.
