Head of the EU Delegation to Serbia Vincent Degert said Friday that both Serbia and the EU needed to work on starting accession talks as soon as possible. He and expressed expectation the coming elections in Serbia would not stall the process. “Serbia must solve open issues with Pristina” Degert told B92 he was satisfied with the achieved results and that he believed that Serbia's newly gained candidate status for EU membership was good news. He expressed hope a lot would be done by the end of the year to define a starting date for accession talks, even though Serbia had the elections coming up. The EU Delegation head also said Belgrade needed to continue the dialogue with Pristina, work on judiciary reform and draft a new strategy for fighting corruption. Degert noted Serbia should try to do as much as possible by September 15, when the European Commission completes its annual progress report, but said it was possible to make the report at a later date as well. He stressed that Belgrade and Pristina now needed to reach agreements on energy and telecommunications, which was one of the requirements laid out by the European Commission (EC) in October last year. “It is also very important that we see EULEX is able to exercise its authorities in Kosovo, as well as the implementation of the agreements reached to date,” concluded Degert.
