Swedish FM Carl Bildt is hoping that Serbia will get a date for the beginning of the EU accession talks and start the negotiations by the end of the year. He told Belgrade-based daily Politika that “partition of Kosovo is out of the question”. Serbia can start negotiations “by year’s end” When asked whether abolition of the so-called parallel institutions in northern Kosovo would be a condition for the beginning of the accession talks, Bildt said he did not know. The Swedish minister added that the fact that Serbia was sending money to northern Kosovo did not represent a problem but that the issue of those transactions could be raised. He noted that Romania’s doubts whether Serbia should get the EU candidate status or not due to alleged problems with the Vlach minority in Serbia “were nothing new”. “It is new to the Serbian public, but it is common here. I remember the time when I was a Swedish prime minister and Sweden negotiated about joining the EU at the time, so I used to spend all my time traveling around Europe in order to ensure every single step on the way,” Bildt explained. He stressed that Kosovo was not a “condition of all conditions” for Serbia and that the country’s relations with Kosovo were being discussed as a part of the good neighborly relations policy. “No matter how we define Kosovo, it is in Serbia’s interest that there is stability in Kosovo,” the Swedish foreign minister concluded.
