Head of the EU Delegation to Serbia Vincent Degert has said that Serbia has already past the halfway point to the EU. “The only thing left to do when the negotiations are opened is to join the EU,” he stressed. Serbia halfway there, EU representative says “The negotiations take between three and eight years and it all depends on how efficient Serbia will be, it is up to you to show how good you are,” Degert told Belgrade-based Pink TV. He said that a debate on the national minority issue in Serbia had lasted longer than expected. “We know that the minority issues are always complex. Maybe it was not the right moment for Romania to express its doubt about eastern Serbia,” the head of the EU Delegation to Serbia pointed out. When asked whether he had heard about the alleged poor status of Romanians in Serbia, Degert said that he “is satisfied with what he hears” in talks with the Romanian ambassador to Serbia. “Maybe it should have been done differently, maybe the moment was not right. 27 ministers agreed that Serbia fulfilled what it was expected from it,” he explained. Degert repeated that the EU had requested Serbia to fulfill three conditions – cooperation in the border management with Kosovo, Pristina’s regional representation and allowing EULEX and KFOR to perform their duties efficiently.
