Decision on candidate status on Thursday

After EU ministers’ recommendation to grant Serbia the candidate status, the final decision will be made by EU heads of state and prime ministers on March 1. The organization's leaders will make their decision on the bid on Thursday evening, during the first day of their two-day summit in Brussels, it was reported today. The issue will once again be discussed at the summit and Serbian President Boris Tadic has stated that there is a possibility that the Tuesday’s recommendation could be annulled. After a several-hour long meeting on Tuesday, the EU member states managed to avoid blocking of the decision by Romania.

The other EU member states, especially Germany, insisted on making a recommendation to grant Serbia the EU candidate status and the final decision will be made at the EU heads of state and prime ministers’ summit that will be held on Thursday and Friday in Brussels.

The issue will once again be discussed at the summit and Serbian President Boris Tadić has stated that there is a possibility that the Tuesday’s recommendation could be annulled.

He told B92 that getting the EU candidate status would not be a reason to celebrate and stressed that Serbia had not received what it expected by getting the EU ministers’ recommendation on Wednesday.
