Serbia deserves the candidate status but I believe that now is not a good moment for the EU enlargement, European Parliament (EP) President Martin Schulz says. “I will be completely honest – now is not the right moment for the EU enlargement. The EU’s basic priority is to resolve the economic crisis. The EU needs a consolidation period. However, Croatia’s accession indicates that the EU is not shutting the doors for the candidate countries,” he explained. "Time not right for EU enlargement" “Serbia deserves to get the official EU candidate status and start the accession talks. That should be achieved at the meeting in March,” the EP president was quoted as saying, adding that it was still early to say whether this would happen for sure since the decision needed to be unanimous. He noted that Serbia could improve its chances by normalizing relations with Pristina. “Both sides should talk about very concrete issues, such as recognition of diplomas, energy, trade and telecommunications, even when they still are not able to reach a full agreement,” Schulz stressed. He pointed out that Serbia should be ready to join the Union. “It needs to accept all difficult and serious EU norms and standards, from competition policy, food quality and waste management to state institutions and officials capable of standing up to corruption. Serbia needs to respect all basic EU values such as valid laws, respect of certain freedoms and protection of minorities. It needs to adopt and implement dozens of thousands of pages of EU laws known as acquis communautaire. It should be at peace with its neighbors. These difficult tasks need to be done regardless of when you will achieve the EU membership,” the EP president concluded. Martin Schulz NIN
