The whole region faces decisions that demand great responsibility and risks that can only be taken by brave leaders, PACE Rapporteur Bjorn von Sydow has said. The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) official made the statement on Friday, at the end of his two-day visit to Belgrade. "Region faces responsible decisions" Pro-European leaders should display willingness to assume responsibility, he stressed, according to a Council of Europe statement. He thanked the authorities on a warm welcome, openness, respect and constructive approach and recommended that Belgrade continue its EU mediated talks with Pristina based on a pragmatic approach focused on the needs and safety of all citizens and facilitate the participation of Kosovo representatives in important international and regional organizations. The communication between the two sides is not easy, but it is always better than none, Von Sydow stated, adding that the talks between Belgrade and Pristina were an undeniably significant and fruitful element in the historical process. The solutions that are reached through negotiations always require good will from all sides and willingness to compromise, Von Sydow emphasized. The agreements made in this dialogue have to be followed to the letter and implemented by both sides, he noted. It will help vastly to establish mutual trust, enable Belgrade and Pristina to move forward and benefit the entire region, added Von Sydow. The consultations with the entire Serb community in Kosovo, which he began with a meeting with four presidents of northern Kosovo municipalities in November 2011, have to be deepened, he remarked, adding that he would decide on that in the coming months as he prepared his report.
