Serbian Minister for Kosovo Goran Bogdanovic says holding of a referendum in the north would cause a new division to Serbs south and north of the Ibar River. Commenting on the northern Kosovo Serbs’ decision to hold the referendum in February, he said that things could not be done without thinking about the Serbs living south of the Ibar River. Referendum will cause new rifts – minister “In this situation the people will be left at the mercy of someone who at the moment is not doing anything good for them. Everything that is happening in the north reflects south of the Ibar River. That’s why these people are rightfully concerned and they are closely monitoring the situation in northern Kosovo and Metohija,” the minister pointed out. He reiterated the Serbian government’s position that the referendum in northern Kosovo should not be held. “This could lead to further divisions and destabilization of the situation in northern Kosovo. Our position is therefore completely clear, and that is that a solution to Kosovo and Metohija’s status should be reached through dialogue and that life issues that Serbs south of the Ibar River, and of course Serbs in northern Kosovo and Metohija, are facing should be solved,” Bogdanovic explained. Commenting on claims that Ministry for Kosovo and the Democratic Party (DS) were responsible for the holding of the referendum in the north, the minister stressed that this was not true.
