Serbian parliament Speaker Slavica Djukic-Dejanovic expects the Democratic Party and the Serbian Socialist Party to form a government after the elections. She stressed that this was the only realistic option. DS-SPS-led government “only realistic option” The speaker told Tanjug that the Socialists would accept all other parties with similar programs. She believes that the ruling coalition has achieved the main goals despite the difficulties it faced and that nobody could have done any better in the difficult circumstances. According to her, the SPS will offer its current coalition partners United Serbia (JS) and the Party of United Pensioners of Serbia (PUPS) to take part in the elections together. Commenting on opposition’s calls for early parliamentary elections, especially after Serbia failed to get the EU candidate status on December 9, Djukic-Dejanovic said the requests were unrealistic and insincere. “It is not likely that the opposition would succeed in its wish to hold the elections earlier. I am not sure that they truly want that because there have been no serous attempts,” she explained. The speaker added that the election campaigns had already started and that the citizens would decide who they trusted the most. Djukic-Dejanovic assessed that the elections would most likely be held on May 6, 2012. According to her, the standard of living and the economy will be the most important issues for the citizens during the election campaign. “The issues of standard and Serbia’s economic development are still the most important, as well as ways to prevent the new wave of the economic crisis from hitting the country, how to preserve jobs and open new ones, those are issues for those who offer policy for difficult times that are ahead of us,” the parliament speaker pointed out. She added that the next year would be difficult and that stabilization and improvement in citizens’ standard of living could be expected in 2013. Djukic-Dejanovic concluded that Serbia’s EU pathway was not questionable anymore and that the future MPs would face a very important task – implementation of laws and further development of the parliamentary democracy.
