The head of the Anti-Corruption Council has criticized the authorities to say that their statements about fighting corruption were "not true". "All the stories about the fight thus far against corruption are not true, that's not how corruption should be fought. We must have reforms and good laws, the capacity and strength of institutions that will guarantee that those laws will be implemented," Verica Barac told B92. "Tycoons and politics colluding in Serbia" According to her, the essence of the current problem lies in collusion between political parties, tycoons and criminal elements, which survived the 1990s era, "and even strengthened in the meantime". Barac noted that at present, it was unclear who finances parties in Serbia, how the state budget money is spent, how much the country is borrowing - "and what is happening in public enterprises". "Without all the previous issued being solved, the same collusion is taking place as in the 199s, plus all the people and values have been reinstated. Those are closed centers of power that consist of secret services, Milosevic-era tycoons, many other influential people, and political parties, that are entirely a part of that system," she said. The Anti-Corruption Council chairwoman further noted that had several important questions been resolved - including "dissolving all secret services, opening all secret files, carrying out lustration and adopting good laws" - corruption would be discussed "as a different phenomenon in Serbia today".
