Leader of the opposition DSS party Vojislav Kostunica has stated that Serbia should have told Brussels that joining the EU was no longer the country's goal. According to the Belgrade-based daily Danas, the former Yugoslav president and Serbian prime minister once again criticized those in power in Serbia for their EU integration policy: DSS leader: Authorities are humiliating people "Instead of chasing this 'candidate status' fog for the next two months, Serbia should rationally review its position, and find the right way for a new national policy and a new state goal. Instead of the EU rejecting Serbia as a candidate, Serbia should have told Brussels that our state goal was no longer to join." Kostunica accused the authorities of humiliating their own people "by persistently refusing for months to hold a debate on Kosovo in the Serbian parliament". Asked to comment on some analysts' opinion that Serbia "could be taken over by extremists" because it was not made a candidate for EU membership, the DSS leader said the authorities were constantly intimidating the citizens with claims that calamity will follow once they leave the scene. "Now they're threatening the citizens with extremists taking over if the candidate status does not materialize, but it is the government that conducts the 'EU has no alternative policy" that is politically extreme. What is extremism if not declaring an idea to be without any alternative? The policy of 'EU has no alternative' is an example of political extremism," concluded Kostunica.
