Serbia needs to “prove itself with actions, not words”

European Parliament Rapporteur for Serbia Jelko Kacin has said that Serbia needs to prove itself “with actions, not words” before it gets the candidate status. Kacin stressed that the EU did not have any new conditions for Serbia. Serbia needs to “prove itself with actions, not words” “If Serbia decided to stop the dialogue with Pristina and it took it months to get back to the process, it is unrealistic to expect to get the credibility back in a few weeks. This is precisely why Serbia got the opportunity to strengthen the credibility in the next several months,” he said. According to him, the EU did not punish Serbia but Serbia punished itself instead. Kacin added that none of the EU officials had ever asked Serbia to recognize Kosovo. “I think that Serbia instead of recognizing Kosovo’s independence needs to recognize that Kosovo Serbs are a part of the solution, that those in the south went to the local elections, that they have 14 MPs in the Kosovo assembly and that they have three ministers in (Kosovo Prime Minister) Hashim Thaci’s government,” he explained. He repeated that there were barricades in northern Kosovo and that the protesters were attacking the international forces, including the ones from the EU member states. According to the European Parliament rapporteur, normalization of relations with Kosovo represents a necessary precondition for Belgrade’s faster progress toward the EU because none of the Western Balkan countries will have access to the EU without full regional cooperation and stability. He added that Serbia “always makes the same mistake”. “It starts making political changes and messages in the last minute when the water is already going down its throat. It makes a minimal progress at the last second and at the same time it makes drama about the political consequences in the region if its expectations are not fulfilled,” Kacin pointed out. He also criticized Serbian Deputy Prime Minister Bozidar Djelic, who resigned on Friday, claiming that he either did not understand or did not want to understand EU’s position on Serbia. “His strong words about Germany last week did not yield results. On the contrary, they once again unpleasantly surprised German politicians and the local public which generally supports Serbia,” Kacin concluded. Jelko Kacin
