Serbian Defense Minister Dragan Sutanovac has stated that Serbia is now closer to Europe than ever, despite the fact that it failed to get the candidate status. “The fact that Serbia’s EU candidate status is being discussed is an indicator that Serbia is on the right path,” he told Beta news agency. Defense minister: Serbia closer to EU than ever The defense minister stressed that the assessment that Serbia had made significant progress in the implementation of reforms confirmed that Serbia was implementing European standards and values in its society and added that the country should not and must not renounce it. “Regardless of the postponement of the decision for February or March, we cannot give up on our European future, instead we have to continue to improve every segment of our society in accordance with the standards that exist in developed European states,” Sutanovac pointed out. Stressing that it was an obligation of every democratic government to preserve tradition and cherish universal values, he repeated that Serbia’s EU path had been determined by great Serbian reformers, military officials and kings who had introduced European values to Serbia. “Serbia therefore wants to be equal in the family of European peoples even today, a country with tradition of democracy and democratic future. Also, because of our ancestors whose visions shed light to Serbia’s European path we are obligated to provide European perspective to our descendants.
