“Kosovo wants better relations with Serbia”

Kosovo Prime Minister Hashim Thaci has said in Brussels that Kosovo’s aim is to have good relations with all of its neighbors, including Serbia. Thaci stated this after a meeting with European Council President Herman Van Rompuy on Wednesday. “Kosovo wants better relations with Serbia” He added that he told Van Rompuy that Kosovo “is committed to close cooperation with all neighbors, Macedonia, Albania, Montenegro and to have better relations with Serbia, as two sovereign countries”. “We know our past but we are working hard on the future and to make both countries good neighbors and EU and NATO members,” Thaci stressed. “Of course, we have problems in the north but there is also a full commitment of Brussels and the U.S. to work closely with us, meaning with Kosovo government, EULEX, NATO so we could have the freedom of movement, rule of law and elections in accordance with Kosovo’s laws,” he said. The Kosovo PM added that he had received a clear EU support from the European Council president. According to him, this is a clear support to Kosovo, visa liberalization dialogue, trade relations and Kosovo’s membership in the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). “Kosovo is ready, it has one goal and one vision and that is to get into the EU as soon as possible,” Thaci concluded. “The European Union welcomes the latest positive results in the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue, especially the agreement on integrated border management, which both parties pledged to implement,” Van Rompuy said after a meeting with the Kosovo prime minister in Brussels. He said that Kosovo needed to continue and intensify its efforts, especially concerning the rule of law, including the fight against organized crime and corruption, a statement issued by the European Council reads. Van Rompuy said that, although Kosovo had made progress in many fields, there was still a number of important challenges to respond to, and gave recognition to Thaci for his constructive role, encouraging him to continue striving to achieve results in the interest of Kosovo, Serbia and the region as a whole.
