Serbian Labor and Social Policy Rasim Ljajic says Serbia has to resolve the issue of Pristina's regional representation in order to get the EU candidate status. Ljajic told B92 that it was now clear there were no new conditions for Serbia but that the problem of regional representation of Pristina needed to be solved in order to get the status. Candidate status depends on further talks, minister says According to him, that is not a new condition but it was a condition for obtaining of a date for the beginning of the accession negotiations which has been postponed. Belgrade and Pristina will today continue the talks about Kosovo’s representation at regional meetings. Ljajic also said it seemed to him that there were chances for getting the EU candidate status but, however, added that this would depend on talks via video link between EU facilitator Robert Cooper and Belgrade team chief Borislav Stefanovic. “If they find a solution in keeping with our interests and the Resolution 1244, we can expect a positive outcome on December 9,” the minister stressed. He stated that Serbia on its EU integration path had to do a lot, including harmonizing its laws with the EU standards and implementing reforms. Commenting on the upcoming election, Ljajic said he expected the elections to be called in March and held on May 6. He pointed out that parties that he used to be in coalition with were closest to him, including the parties of the current coalition. When asked whether this meant that he could form a coalition with any party aside from the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), the labor minister said that he could only cooperate with the SNS on a local level. “It is still early for official meetings with parties’ representatives, we’ll do that after New Year’s. If we enter the government it has to be as small as possible, to start reforms in the first year of the government’s mandate,” Ljajic pointed out and added that his Socialist Democratic Party of Serbia (SDPS) would win the elections not only in Novi Pazar but in the entire Sandzak as well.
