Serbian President Boris Tadic is taking part at opposition Social Democratic Party of Germany's international conference in Berlin on Saturday. When asked why Serbia and other Western Balkan countries still wanted to join the EU, the Serbian president said that “the EU is a project of peace and one of the best projects in human history”. EU one of best projects in history, Tadic says He stressed that not only new members but the current EU member states would benefit from the EU enlargement. Tadic said he understood the challenges that the EU was facing but he also repeated that the Union must not “lose the sight of the bigger picture”. “Without the European perspective in the Western Balkans we will not be able to tell ordinary people that we will have a prosperous society, a society without violence,” the Serbian president pointed out. “The EU is not complete without the Western Balkans, there is no Western Balkans without Serbia which is in the middle of it,” he said. Former Italian Prime Minister Massimo D’Alema, Romanian Social Democratic Party leader Victor Ponta and former Bulgarian Prime Minister Sergei Stanishev are also taking part in the discussion. During his visit to Berlin, Tadic will meet with top Social Democratic Party of Germany officials and numerous European social democratic and socialist politicians who are taking part in the conference.
