The minister also stated that the international community had guaranteed protection from persecution to Serbs in Kosovo, but that they still did not enjoy this right. "I think they have decided that a better protector for them... can be our partner and our friend - the Russian Federation," concluded Jeremic. On Thursday, his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov said his country had studied the citizenship requests carefully, but that it had to adhere to relevant laws, and that Russia understood what motivated those who had applied for its passports.
