Anti-Corruption Agency Director Zorana Markovic has stated that an audit has been launched in order to determine whether parties broke the law on party funding. “We are auditing the activities of all parties which have been very active lately. They are allowed to promote their work. However, it is forbidden to promote candidates for some offices or election package with which parties go before voters,” Markovic replied when asked what the parties were allowed to do in the period before the election race. Funding of political parties scrutinized She told daily Vecernje novosti that the public would very soon be informed on the results of the audit. “If we determine that the regulation was not respected, we will submit a proposal for initiating criminal proceedings,” she stressed. When asked whether posters which showed up in certain towns were against the law, Markovic said that the new law was more liberal than the previous, since the latter did not allow parties to put up posters unless elections were called. “However, when the new law was drafted, it was determined that the parties should be given the possibility to promote their program and goals even when there is no election campaign. Now party leaders can be put on billboards or posters at any time, but with no election messages on them. Of course, they have to respect the articles of the Law on Advertising,” the Anti-Corruption Agency director stated. She also said that the job of the independent institution was to keep an eye on the parties, regardless of whether campaign was officially called or not. “A more demanding task of checking every dinar spent the Agency will undertake as soon as the date for parliamentary elections is set,” Markovic concluded.
