Democratic Party (DS) deputy leader Jelena Trivan says that not a single serious state would change its national goals and strategy ahead of every election. “Those who copied our program and who on top of it announce that they would negotiate about Kosovo’s status have forgotten that it’s this government’s great success that anyone has even started the talks after Kosovo declared independence,” she said commenting on Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) policy toward Kosovo. “We cannot change national goals ahead of every election" Trivan reminded those who “would like us to explicitly or implicitly recognize the independence of Kosovo” that the EU did not want a country that did not have a national strategy and that was changing it every once in a while. She said that the DS therefore would not renounce the national interests regarding the sovereignty and identity and the EU membership. “We believe that renouncing one of those two goals would not bring us closer to the solution of the other one. The goals are mutually conditioned but those who believe that by giving up on the Kosovo issue or Serbia’s sovereignty an open door and EU membership will await Serbia tomorrow, are very naive,” Trivan explained. “If it is a success to prevent Kosovo from going into a complete statehood in such circumstances and to make them remember that it is an illegal part of the seceded Serbian territory, which is something we should talk about, then just the fact that Belgrade and Pristina are in the negotiating dialogue, that the whole world was against at one point, is a success,” the DS official noted. “I am telling those who copied our program, and I primarily mean the Serbian Progressive Party, and only added one fact, which is at this point pretty fantastic, that they will unlike the current government start the status negotiations, and I remind them that the entire international community was against the negotiations which are being conducted at the moment,” Trivan stressed. She believes that “one of Serbia’s biggest successes” was precisely the fact that Belgrade was negotiating with Pristina after it had declared independence. Jelena Trivan (B92)

“If it is a success to prevent Kosovo from going into a complete statehood in such circumstances and to make them remember that it is an illegal part of the seceded Serbian territory, which is something we should talk about, then just the fact that Belgrade and Priština are in the negotiating dialogue, that the whole world was against at one point, is a success,” the DS official noted.

She believes that “one of Serbia’s biggest successes” was precisely the fact that Belgrade was negotiating with Priština after it had declared independence.
