Former Stability Pact for South Eastern Europe Coordinator Erhard Busek says partition of Kosovo does not necessarily have to create problems in the region. He said in Novi Sad that partition of Kosovo would not necessarily cause additional problems in Bosnia-Herzegovina because those were two different issues. Kosovo partition “not necessarily bad idea" “Those are two different processes and it is impossible to compare one to the other, it’s wrong. Every situation is special,” Busek assessed. “If a sustainable solution is achieved, then anything is possible. It’s not connected because Bosnia-Herzegovina’s internal problem is quite different than Kosovo’s problem,” he explained. The former Stability Pact for South Eastern Europe coordinator added that he had proposed the idea of Kosovo partition “as something that can be discussed”. “Let’s wait and see. The question is whether Belgrade and Pristina authorities can agree and what they can agree on, what the role of the international community is in all that,“ he said. Accosting to Busek, processes take a long time in South East Europe and decision making takes a long time. “It’s a learning process and it is obvious that learning sometimes isn’t easy,” he noted. Busek said in late August that Serbia should present a proposal to change Kosovo borders and added that the international community would agree to the solution if Belgrade and Pristina agreed on it. “That would be the best solution for both sides and the partition proposal should be directly submitted to Kosovo residents and the solution should be discussed with them. Brussels and Washington say that borders cannot be changed but they would come to terms with the idea if Pristina and Belgrade reached an agreement,” he concluded. Erhard Busek (format.at)
