Barricades remain in northern Kosovo

Last night was peaceful in northern Kosovo. A certain number of Serbs spent the night at the barricades that have been set up on several locations. A bridge over the Ibar River is also blocked. Barricades remain in northern Kosovo Several trucks unloaded gravel on the main bridge that separates northern and southern parts of Kosovska Mitrovica on Wednesday evening, blocking traffic. EULEX troops and Kosovo police officers were deployed to the southern part of the bridge. EULEX also blocked the bridge last night with several vehicles, including an armored truck. Kosovska Mitrovica-Raska road was completely blocked last night in the village of Rudare, while vehicles could only use one traffic lane on the Kosovska Mitrovica-Zvecan road. Kosovo Serbs spent the night at the barricades in the town of Leposavic, on the road leading to the Jarinje administrative crossing. German KFOR troops replaced U.S. troops at the Jarinje checkpoint on Wednesday. The local Serbs decided to block roads as a response to Pristina's announcements that it will take control over the checkpoints in northern Kosovo on September 16, which Serbia strongly opposes.
