Serbian FM Vuk Jeremic said Friday that Serbia's EU integration should not stop or slow down, since it would represent a failure of both Europe and the region. “Serbia is in a rather complex situation, but bringing its EU integration to a halt would represent ‘a collective failure’ of both Europe and the region,” he said at the final panel of the Serbia-EU Forum. “Halting Serbia's EU integration - Europe's failure” “We are the first generation in this part of the world that is mature enough to resolve problems by peaceful and diplomatic means alone,” the foreign minister stressed. “However, that does not imply that Serbia is ready to give up on its national interests,” he added. “Should there be a halt, a security vacuum will be created,” Jeremic said. Commenting on the situation in Kosovo, Jeremic said that we often witness unilateral moves and attempts at changing the situation on the ground by use of force. “Several days ago, we witnessed one more threat,” he said, referring to such attempts as unacceptable ways for resolving the outstanding issues, and underlining that Belgrade was committed to finding peaceful solutions to all problems. Jeremic reiterated that there was no alternative to the EU but underscored the importance of finding alternate routes for reaching Serbia's strategic goal - the EU accession. The minister stressed that Serbia would do all in its power to meet the Copenhagen criteria, but that the country would not do what it could not possibly do. “Taking into account what Serbia has achieved since 2006, its commitment to the EU integration should not be questioned,” Jeremic pointed out. The foreign minister said that Serbia was facing real problems but that its commitment to the European Union was strong. “I hope that the EU will recognize our efforts and facilitate full integration of this part of Europe,” Jeremic concluded.
