According to U.S. diplomatic cables published by Wikileaks, Boris Tadic was told in 2009 that Serbia could not hope to become an EU member before 2019. The message was delivered by German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Belgrade-based daily Blic writes today. "Serbia told two years ago it couldn't join EU before 2019" The cable in question quotes a German Foreign Ministry official who in 2009 told the U.S. embassy in Berlin that Serbian officials were spreading the impression that Serbia could join the EU as soon as in three or four years. But the German official said that this would take at least ten years, which means that Serbia should not hope to join before 2019, and that Angela Merkel explained this to Serbian President Boris Tadic when he visited Berlin in November 2009. The newspaper also writes that Merkel recently in Belgrade said that Serbia "must make progress in the dialogue with Pristina" in order to become a candidate for EU membership.
