KFOR, Serbs block roads in northern Kosovo

Banjska-Novi Pazar road is still blocked in the village of Izvor since no agreement was reached on Saturday night between Serb representatives, KFOR and EULEX. According to Kosovska Mitrovica District Head Radenko Nedeljkovic, the night was peaceful. He said there had been no talks during the night, adding that it was uncertain what would happen on Sunday. The Kosovska Mitrovica District head said the Serbs were upset but “determined to remain consistent and calm and to persist in their decision not to allow the administrative line between northern Kosovo and central Serbia to be blocked”. “We are scared for our safety because KFOR wants to surround us with wire, to make us live in a ghetto. We will not allow that and we will stand up to it with peaceful and democratic means,” he pointed out. Nedeljkovic has warned that KFOR and EULEX will bear responsibility if violence escalates in the north of the province because they are responsible for security in the area. KFOR blocked an alternative road toward Novi Pazar on Saturday afternoon. KFOR said the blockade was aimed at preventing transport of oil and other commercial goods larger than 3.5 tons.

In response, the Serbs blocked Kosovska Mitrovica-Raška road last night near the village of Rudare but after an hour opened one lane for traffic.

The Kosovska Mitrovica District head said the Serbs were upset but “determined to remain consistent and calm and to persist in their decision not to allow the administrative line between northern Kosovo and central Serbia to be blocked”.
