Only 82 Serbian citizens applied for political asylum in Germany last month, which represents a large decrease compared to the end of 2010. The number of Serbian citizens seeking asylum in Germany has been decreasing since the beginning of the year. Number of asylum seekers from Serbia decreases There were 711 asylum seekers from Serbia in December 2010, 334 in March, only 91 in June and 82 last month. Most asylum seekers last month came from Afghanistan (693), Iraq (497) and Iran (279), followed by those from Syria, Pakistan, Russia and Turkey. Data for the first seven months of the year show that majority of new asylum seekers come from Afghanistan (4,579), Iraq (3,403) and Serbia (1,764). Kosovo is in the seventh place with 751 asylum seekers, while Macedonia with 602 asylum requests came tenth. From July until December 2010 as many as 4,240 new asylum seekers from Serbia went to Germany. The number of asylum seekers from Serbia started to decrease visibly after German authorities in October 2010 revoked financial aid for asylum seekers from Serbia who voluntarily decide to return to their country. The German authorities determined that aid worth EUR 600 was the main reason for the increase in the number of asylum seekers from Serbia. 3,439 foreigners requested asylum in Germany in July, which is 5.2 percent more than in July 2010, the German Federal Interior Ministry has stated.
