The Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) supports Serbia becoming an EU member and a country of social justice, SPS leader Ivica Dacic stated on Sunday. He expressed expectation that with such ideas, the party would achieve even better results in the forthcoming elections. “SPS supports Serbia’s EU membership” At a ceremony marking the 21st anniversary of the SPS in Belgrade, Dacic said that the SPS was a modern party with social and democratic orientation whose goal was to fight for a socially just Serbia. “This is the goal of our coalition with the Party of United Pensioners of Serbia (PUPS) and United Serbia (JS), and this was an integral part of the coalition agreement, that is the agreement on reconciliation between SPS and the Democratic Party (DS), he stressed. “Lessons should be learned from the past,” the SPS leader said and added that he did not wish SPS to be a synonym for anything that was negative on Serbia's political scene but to be a synonym for a better life for all citizens, Serbia's EU accession and a country of socially justice. When it comes to the forthcoming elections, Dacic said that the party supported setting up legal frameworks for presidential, parliamentary, local and provincial elections in Serbia to be staged separately. He stated that authorities were conducting an intensive search for the remaining Hague Tribunal fugitive Goran Hadzic and expressed hope that the search would be successful so that it would no longer constitute an aggravating circumstance in decision-making with regard to Serbia's EU candidate status and setting the date for initiation of accession talks. The celebration of SPS' 21st anniversary was attended by Prime Minister Mirko Cvetkovic as the special representative appointed by Serbian President Boris Tadic and the DS. The PM expressed satisfaction with the successful cooperation which the Serbian government and the DS achieved with SPS representatives, and said that he hoped the cooperation would continue to be equally successful in the future. He said he hoped that the next time SPS celebrates its anniversary, EU accession negotiations would be already underway. (Beta)
