Interior Minister Ivica Dacic today received a man who was seen being abused by police officers in a video that surfaced on the internet. The victim - a Roma (Gypsy) man identified as Danijel Stojanovic - was arrested for theft in 2007 in the northeastern town of Vrsac when he was beaten while in custody. Minister: Police abuse video officers arrested Dacic today apologized to Stojanovic, as he met with him and his father. Dacic said that two police officers involved in the incident were arrested, while a third "will be processed". The minister also stated that "all those responsible who held commanding positions at the time will be sacked". The minister also said that "the issue is not whether somebody committed a crime, but that police cannot react in the way seen in the video". "This kind of behavior greatly hurts the police," Dacic said, noting it was his goal to "protect police, but also to protect citizens from unlawful police behavior". Earlier today, the Serbian Police Union issued a statement condemning their colleagues who abused the man in their custody, but also criticizing Dacic for his decision to receive the Roma man, who they said had a criminal background. "We believe that the minister's move is aimed at gathering political points, rather than calming down the situation. We do not understand this move by Minister Dacic. The case is yet to be investigated," said the union in a statement. "The minister has no time to see union representatives, his agenda is full. But the minister is available for criminals," the statement said. Danijel Stojanovic and his father Gani Stojanovic (Beta)
