In order to be granted an EU candidate status and possibly the date for accession talks, Serbia should pass a bill on public property. MPs should also "start adopting a bill on restitution", Parliament Speaker Slavica Djukic-Dejanovic has said. Parliament speaker: First laws, then EU candidacy Djukic-Dejanovic told the Belgrade-based daily Blic that in order to meet these requirements, the Serbian National Assembly will have to work diligently throughout the summer. She refused to comment on whether the Kosovo issue is an EU condition for further integration. “No matter what my personal stand may be, the official position (of Serbia) is well-known,” she said, adding that the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue is expected to be a lengthy process. Taking into account that Serbia expects to become an EU candidate country in October, I do not think there is room for any new conditioning in that sense, she added. When asked whether it will be possible for the parliament to pass the bill on restitution by October, given that the government still does not have a clear plan on how to return the property to its original owners, Djukic-Dejanovic said she believed the bill will enter the parliamentary procedure during the summer.
