Defense Minister and Democratic Party (DS) deputy leader Dragan Sutanovac says that claim that farmers’ protest is a result of conflicts in the DS is unfounded. He expressed expectation that the government and farmers would reach an agreement and that roads would be unblocked soon. Minister denies conflicts in ruling party Sutanovac pointed out that it was a fact that there were some problems in payment of subsidies to farmers but that it was also a fact that there were chronic milk and meat shortages in Serbia. “If the Agriculture Ministry does not focus on the problem with livestock breeding I am afraid that we will get in a situation in which our country will run out of milk,” he warned. The DS deputy leader said that he fully supported Agriculture Minister Dusan Petrovic in his attempt to find a solution that would be acceptable to both sides. According to Sutanovac, it is important to find a solution that will allow a large number of farmers who own properties up to 30 hectares and smaller number of those who have farms larger than 100 hectares to get the subsidies. “I expect that the deal will be made and that the streets will be unblocked,” he said and called on farmers to go back to work because the road blockades were not doing anybody any good. He pointed out that the blockade of roads would not jeopardize functioning of Serbia’s defense system. Dragan Sutanovac (novosti.rs, file)
