Frontex Executive Director Ilkka Laitinen says the effects of the measures taken by Serbia to counter abuses of visa liberalization are already visible. The path that Serbia follows is good, stated Laitinen in Brussels on Thursday after meeting with Serbian Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Ivica Dacic. Number of false asylum seekers "halved" "We have already noticed the effect of the measures taken by the Serbian authorities and Interior Ministry, but we know that there are no fast victories when it comes to issues like that, that we need to be consistent and persevering. However, the direction in which the things are going is good," Laitinen told the journalists. Laitinen, whose opinion will affect the report on the visa liberalization supervision mechanism that EU Commissioner for Home Affairs Cecilia Malmstrom will present at the Foreign Affairs Council next week, said that cooperation between Frontex and the Serbian authorities is excellent is all areas - from exchange of information, to joint operations, to training. He mentioned that, even though the prospects are good, a lot of work remains to be done. Dacic said that, in accordance with the opinion of the European Commission (EC) and Frontex, Serbia will decide on what protective measures should be taken so as to prevent the violation of the conditions for visa liberalization, but not to go from one extreme to the other and jeopardize human rights by trying to prevent abuse. "Before we decide to amend laws, we will analyze together with the EC some of the proposed measures, such as the ban on leaving the country for a certain number of years or confiscation of passports," Dacic underscored. He said that he was "glad to hear two things from Laitinen" - that the EU itself is considering a reform of the rules regarding asylum, and that the number of bogus asylum seekers from Serbia was "more than halved" in the past several months. Dacic conferred on Monday with EU Commissioner for Home Affairs Cecilia Malmstrom on visa liberalization and problems with bogus asylum seekers which ensued after including Serbia in the White Schengen list.
