President Boris Tadic stated late on Thursday in Belgrade that Serbia "should be ambitious when it comes to the process of the country's European integration". He made the statement following his meeting with EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton. President tells EU's Ashton Serbia "wants date for talks" That is the reason why, in addition to being made EU candidate, Serbia "wants a date for initiation of talks to be set this year as well", said Tadic. "Serbia has the right to have high expectations, especially when it meets its obligations," Tadic underscored, on the day of the arrest of Hague fugitive Ratko Mladic. Tadic added that Serbia needs to have the date of talks set because this would be a major step ahead in the political and "civilizational" sense, and would also be beneficial for the entire region. According to the president, Croatia's EU accession should not be followed by a big pause before Serbia and Montenegro get integrated. As he said, this would also create a better atmosphere in the region. Ashton welcomed Mladic's arrest and replying to the question as to whether Serbia would obtain EU candidate status by the end of the year, she underscored that, "politically speaking, this is an important day and that technical activities on Serbia's European integration would continue". She added that both Serbia and the EU would benefit from Serbia's EU accession. The arrest of war crimes suspect Ratko Mladic will provide new energy for the process of Serbia's European integration, said Ashton. "This day is important for Serbia, but also for the victims and their families," said she. Ashton, who also discussed the dialog between Belgrade and Pristina with Tadic on Thursday, said that this dialog is connected to the solving of practical issues and the improvement of people's lives, while Tadic stated that Serbia wished to solve the "chronic problem" of Kosovo.
