Serbia's Deputy Prime Minister Ivica Dacic assessed today that Serbia "is slowly losing its grip on Kosovo and needs to do something before it is too late". In the previous week, Dacic on several occasions offered his solution in statements for the media, which he said was a "separation". Dacic continues his series of "separation" comments "We are slowly losing Kosovo, unless we do something. Our position is getting worse by the day. It turns out Resolution 1244 is a fraud," Dacic was heard saying during a Tanjug news agency round-table in Belgrade. The leader of the Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) went on to say that "while we respected the Constitution and international law, some countries recognized Kosovo's independence behind Serbia's back." The round table was entitled, "What is missing and what is ahead on the way to EU candidacy". Noting that his proposal for a "separation of territories populated by Serbs and (ethic) Albanians might not be the best possible solution", Dacic pointed out that "dialogue can and must be the way to arrive at a solution". According to him, it is not enough to say "we are upholding the Constitution and hold some patriotic rally and think this will solve the Kosovo issue". Dacic concluded that "separation, followed by living peacefully side by side", would be in the interest of both Serbs and Albanians, and asserted this was "the only realistic solution" - even though he expressed little hope that ethnic Albanians would accept it. "Why would they, if they can take the whole Kosovo? But, on the other hand, how long will the international community keep saying that the proposal is not good just because Albanians will not accept it? The international community wants peace, and not to sweep things under the rug," Dacic expressed his belief. The deputy prime minister, who also serves as interior minister in the Cvetkovic cabinet, also claimed that he was "aware that the Constitution does not allow for such a solution". Furthermore, added Dacic, "I would not dream of violating the country's highest legislative act". Kosovo's ethnic Albanians unilaterally declared independence in February 2008. Serbia, however, rejected the proclamation, and considers it illegal. Ivica Dacic (Tanjug)
