Belgian Ambassador Alain Kundycki has stated that the problem with bogus asylum seekers will not be an obstacle in Serbia's further EU integration process. He added that their number in Belgium is still very high and that the Serbian authorities should make greater effort in order to reduce their inflow. Belgium "under pressure from asylum seekers" This situation places great pressure on the Belgium authorities. We are not able to address all the applications at a speed that these people deserve. However, the problem is that some of them are abusing this opportunity, Kundycki said for the Belgrade-based daily Danas. Kundycki stated that Belgium is not the only country which is faced with a large number of asylum seekers, but that this is also the case with many other European countries, adding that the Serbian authorities are expected to intensify their efforts to reduce the influx of asylum seekers. I would like to recall that the Belgium state secretary sent a letter to the European Commission in order to draw attention to the issue of asylum seekers. Consequently, a special expert mission paid a visit to Serbia to deliver this message to the Belgrade authorities and to find a solution, the ambassador said. For example, the authorities should have organized big campaigns explaining what asylum really is. Minister Ivica Dacic stated recently that it would be good to inform all tourist agencies and other organizations about this problem so that they could help in preventing people from seeking political asylum, the ambassador stated. The ambassador underlined that he does not know how much time is needed for this problem to be solved, but added that he is certain that the Serbian authorities will do all in their might to see this issue resolved. Kundycki announced that Belgium's officials will soon visit Belgrade for this reason.
