Serbian FM Vuk Jeremic stated that the Hague verdict to Croat generals could have a positive and not detrimental effect on the relations in the region. This is because facing the truth is a precondition for reconciliation, he told Belgrade's Politika newspaper in an interview. "Facing truth precondition for reconciliation" The Hague court earlier this month found two former Croat generals guilty of war crimes committed against the country's ethnic Serb population in 1995. Jeremic also told the daily that he does not believe the ruling, which also states that former Croatian president Franjo Tudjman ran a joint criminal enterprise aimed at deporting Serbs from Croatia, could harm the relations in the region. When asked whether he has plans for meeting with his Croatian counterpart to prevent a new wave of anti-Serb mood in Croatia which has been announced by certain sources, Jeremic said that “preventing a new surge of anti-Serb attitude in Croatia is a task for the Croatian government.” Commenting on his visit to Banja Luka, in the Serb Republic (RS), the minister pointed out that exchange of opinions was an important task, having in mind the growing political tensions in Bosnia-Herzegovina, and added that Serbia and the RS - the Serb entity in Bosnia - maintain specific and special relations and that Serbia serves as a guarantee of the Dayton Agreement. He underscored that stability and prosperity of the RS constitute one of Serbia's important interests and that Serbia needs to be engaged in an intensive political dialogue with all Bosnian officials, primarily Milorad Dodik who was democratically appointed as the entity's president. Speaking about the issue of Belgrade-Pristina talks, Jeremic said that the Foreign Ministry and all other government institutions are providing all necessary legal and diplomatic support to the Serbian government's negotiating team, and expressed hope that the process that has started recently would soon yield results when it comes to improving the life of Serbs in Kosovo.
