Opposition SNS party supporters gathered last night in front of a clinic where Tomislav Nikolic is receiving treatment to call on him to end his hunger strike. The president of the Serb Progressive Party (SNS) started his strike last Saturday demanding that the authorities call early elections. Party supporters appeal on leader to end strike His deputy Aleksandar Vucic addressed some 2,000 people who gathered late on Friday in front of the New Belgrade clinic and said Nikolic would "soon lead those who wish changes in Serbia". Nikolic said earlier the same day that he would announce his decision on whether to proceed with the strike on Easter Sunday. Despite the fact their leader is yet to accept their appeal, those SNS supporters who spoke for B92 said that they believed he would soon be "up and bringing Serbia the changes expected from him". Vucic told the gathering that Nikolic was thanking them, and telling them he would "soon lead to the final victory over the regime of Boris Tadic". However, he also "asked to be given time to think this over until Easter". "And then, count on it, he will start the most fierce political showdown with those who have pillaged and destroyed Serbia," said Vucic. The SNS deputy leader reasserted that Nikolic - who, in his words, "only asked for tiny, ordinary elections" - had won, "because he demonstrated that politicians can fight for Serbia's interests honestly". "Headed by Tomislav Nikolic, soon we will tour every town in the country and show that we have a plan that will rescue Serbia from the crisis," Vucic told the gathering, and asked his party's supporters and activists - who shouted chants in support of Nikolic - not to insult President Tadic and other state officials, "since it was Good Friday".
