Changes to the law on election of MPs will be adopted in May, said For European Serbian parliamentary group head Nada Kolundzija. She said that the Serbian parliament would that way fulfill one of the European Commission’s conditions necessary for obtaining the EU candidate status. “Law on election of MPs to be adopted in May” Kolundzija also added that amendments to the law on the election of MPs were not contrary to the Serbian Constitution as the Serbian Radical Party (SRS) and the Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS) claim and that there was a consensus among parties to change the elections system, which would solve the problems. “We have a frame for the law, basic solutions which are, in our deep belief, in accordance with Constitutional Court’s decisions and in accordance with standards we wanted to implement. Those are two basic criteria that were looked a solution for and these solutions fulfill those two criteria, according to everything we heard,” she stressed. Aside from repealing blank resignation letters, the changes to the law on the election of MPs should also solve the issue of election lists and issue of MPs’ mandates. Kolundzija stressed that the amendments to the law would also enable women to get 25 percent of seats in parliament. A public debate was held at the Serbian parliament Thursday on the working version of the amendments to the law on the election of MPs. Party whips, State Administration, Local Self-Government and Human and Minority Rights Minister Milan Markovic, representatives of OSCE, Council of Europe, European Commission, non-governmental organizations, Anti-Corruption Agency, Law Faculty, as well as Equality Protection Commissioner Nevena Petrusic were invited to attend the debate.
