A Serb leader from the northern part of Kosovo has warned against plans to open a disputed court in the northern part of the town of Kosovska Mitrovica. Marko Jaksic, of the Assembly of the Community of Municipalities of Kosovo and Metohija, told Radio Kontakt Plus that such a move could cause unrest. Serb leader in warning over KM court In reference to the Pristina-based, ethnic-Albanian controlled authorities, Jaksic explained that Serbs in the north would not accept "Kosovo's judiciary". The court in Kosovska Mitrovica was reopened in 2008, after it was closed for more than seven months in the wake of the ethnic Albanian unilateral declaration of independence. But only international judges and prosecutors have worked there since. Serbs form a majority north of the Ibar River and reject both the UDI and the authority of the government in Pristina. Jaksic said he thought there could be violence "considering the messages sent by the Serb judiciary during the latest rally in Kosovska Mitrovica". He explained that the Kosovska Mitrovica court was a part of the network of Serbia's reformed judiciary, and that he was "surprised that judges from Kosovska Mitrovica were not insisting on returning to the building". "I count on it that Serb judges will start a political campaign to return to their workplaces. What Pristina is doing, assisted by some international representatives, goes against Serbia's interests,", Jaksic noted. Jaksic concluded by saying that he thought the local Serbs would not accept "Kosovo's judiciary", and adding that the president of the District Court had sent "a clear message that Pristina has no mandate to open the court, and that this would be met with resistance from the citizens". Disputes over the court - based in the northern, mostly Serb part of the ethnically divided town - previously caused some of the worst rioting in this part of the province. In early 2008 KFOR and UNMIK stormed the premises to forcibly remove protesting Serb judges and prosecutors, a move that sparked violence across the town.
