Kosovo issue "in accordance with Constitution"

The issue of Kosovo will be resolved in accordance with the Constitution, Serbian Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic said on Monday. The country's Constitution states in the preamble that Kosovo is an integral part of Serbia. Kosovo's ethnic Albanians unilaterally declared independence more three years ago. Kosovo issue "in accordance with Constitution" After meeting with his Belgian counterpart Steven Vanackere in Belgrade, Jeremic also noted that the early phase of talks between Belgrade and Pristina was underway, "in which the issue of status has not been directly raised". When asked if Serbia could join the EU without recognizing Kosovo, Jeremic told the journalists that Serbia would "continue cooperating with the European partners so that all of the country's priorities would be fulfilled". Vanackere pointed out that Belgium strongly supported Serbia in its EU integration process, adding that, regarding Kosovo, "one should work on improving neighborly relations", and creating stability. Jeremic and Vanackere pointed out that Serbia and Belgium had "good bilateral relations, and they dedicated special attention to economic cooperation". Neither Vanackere and Jeremic wished to comment on the hunger and thirst strike of opposition Serb Progressive Party (SNS) leader Tomislav Nikolic. "We do not complain to foreigners on our own problems," claimed Jeremic. "This is an internal political issue and we did not discuss it at the meeting." Vanackere added that it was not up to him to comment on hunger strike, which he described as an internal political issue. Vanackere also said that his country supports Serbia's EU integration and added he was pleased the Delhaize Group from Belgium had decided to invest nearly one billion euros in Serbia. Jeremic informed Vanackere about Serbia's progress in EU integration and the situation in the region. Vanackere stated his visit should be interpreted as his country's desire to have the best possible relations with Serbia. According to him, economic cooperation was an important topic of the meeting with Jeremic. Belgium is one of the most important investors in Serbia, Jeremic noted, adding that he expected that to encourage other investors in the world to come to Serbia. Earlier on Monday, the Belgian minister met with Serbian Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Ivica Dacic.
