Opposition DSS party leader Vojislav Kostunica says Serbia should seek stronger ties with the EU without joining the organization. Speaking at a DSS-organized forum in the town of Jagodina, Kostunica said that would be the most rational policy for the country. "Cooperation, but no EU membership" He also noted that Kosovo was a problem in relations between Serbia and the EU, but that the problem was not created by Serbia, but rather by the EU. "Serbia should be guided by a policy of 'short reckonings make long friends', as it does when it comes to other countries," according to the DSS party president. Kostunica added that "Serbia belongs in Europe and should cooperate with the EU to its advantage, not to its detriment". As for the country's efforts to become a candidate for EU membership, the former PM believes the word "candidate" became "worn out for too much use", while in reality it represented "a paper crown". "The current government is a captive to its story that there is no alternative to the EU, thereby showing that the candidate bid, which is only a contract and gratitude for what has been done - and who knows if and when there will be negotiations - is more important to it that Serbia." Instead of working to create conditions to improve the standard of living the current government is talking about what will be, Kostunica further noted, adding that "a large number of people in Serbia have Serbia's bare survival, rather than the EU, as their interest". "The regime's worship of the EU is such that they have completely neglected Serbia's interests," Kostunica concluded. Vojislav Kostunica (FoNet, file)
