Wartime mayor of the Bosnia-Herzegovina town of Trebinje Bozidar Vucurovic was arrested at a border crossing between Serbia and Bosnia and held in custody. He was detained on Monday a warrant issued by Croatia for war crimes in Dubrovnik. Former Bosnian town mayor held in custody Vucurevic, one of the founders of the Serb Democratic Party (SDS) in Bosnia, was questioned in the Higher Court in Sabac, western Serbia, and held in custody, court spokesperson Slobodan Velisavljevic told Beta news agency. He added that now procedure will be followed to determine conditions for extradition to Croatia. The Croatian judiciary has charged Vucurevic with the bombing of Dubrovnik at the start of the 1990s when he was the head of the Trebinje municipality. The local prosecution for the Dubrovnik area in Croatia charges Vucurevic with ordering the mobilization of the territorial defense in his municipality in September 1991, and forming of a special police unit. The prosecution further believes that the units were added to the ranks of the Yugoslav People's Army (JNA), which "attacked Croatia from the territory of Herzegovina and Montenegro, temporarily occupying the area from Prevlaka to Ston, and keeping the town of Dubrovnik in total blockade". Meanwhile, Vucurevic spoke for the Croatian media from his detention to say he was "glad to be arrested", as he would have a chance to prove he was not responsible for war crimes. "I have been arrested based on false accusations coming from Dubrovnik and claims that I was guilty for shelling that town. I'm glad this has happened at last so that all those lies can once and for all be removed from my name," he told the Zagreb-based Jutarnji List daily in a telephone statement. The newspaper also reported, citing sources close to the Serbian War Crimes Prosecution, that if Vucurevic - as is believed to be the case - holds both Bosnian and Serbian passports, he will not be extradited to Croatia because the two countries do not have an extradition agreement covering war crime cases.
