Serbian President and Democratic Party (DS) leader Boris Tadic has stated that it would be best to hold elections after Serbia gets the EU candidate status. He said at the DS Main Board meeting that February was the worst month for the elections. Elections “after we get EU candidate status” The DS leader stressed that the reshuffled government was not the most perfect one, but that the first steps had been made. He also pointed out that Serbia had never been closer to obtaining the EU candidate status, adding that the EU accession was Serbia’s strategically most important goal and that it would be reached if reforms continued and if certain laws were adopted. Tadic warned that the country should not allow anybody to steer it away from the EU membership and establish a system that was not in accordance with the EU’s system. He said that the DS’ role was to continue the policy that would bring benefit to the citizens and lead them into the EU. “This policy has no alternative. The EU jointly solves crises in the countries hit by disasters, tsunami and Serbia needs that solidarity,” the DS leader said and repeated that the EU was not a “sanatorium” and solution to all Serbia’s problems, but that it was a safe zone. He pointed out, however, that the EU was also facing problems and that it remained to be seen how it would solve the eurozone, border and security issues. “We must be aware of that fact and the fact that there will be problems we will face in the EU too, but the Union does not have a better alternative,” Tadic explained.
